Wesley launches job support for government-assisted refugees in Hamilton and Brantford

Babylon Radio
Listen nowGovernment-assisted refugees in Hamilton, Brantford and nearby communities can ask their Wesley settlement worker about a new route into employment.
Wesley announced its Skills Training and Employment Pathways programme, known as STEP, on 23 October. The three-year initiative brings job preparation and employer connections into the settlement process, with a focus on people who are ready to work.
How to access the programme
STEP is for government-assisted refugees. It is not a general application scheme for every newcomer to Canada.
According to Wesley’s programme page, access is through referrals from its Resettlement Assistance Program and Settlement Services teams. If you already receive support from Wesley, ask your worker whether STEP fits your circumstances.
Government-assisted refugees who need to reach Wesley about settlement support can use newcomer.services@wesley.ca or 905-528-5629, extension 302. These are general settlement contacts, not a direct STEP application route. Entry to STEP remains through a referral from Wesley’s RAP or Settlement Services team.
What support is planned?
The Northpine Foundation confirmed its investment in September. It describes individual career planning, skills training, certifications, practical support and connections with employers. Potential sectors include skilled trades, manufacturing, construction, transportation, hospitality and healthcare.
Wesley says Skilled Trades Prep Inc. will help with trade qualifications, recognition of previous experience, apprenticeships and relevant training routes. McMaster University will evaluate the programme.
The aim is to help participants find suitable, lasting work. The announcement does not promise a job or automatic recognition of overseas qualifications.
