Victoria’s Children’s Week celebrates home languages with free family activities

Babylon Radio
Listen nowFamilies in Victoria can explore stories, music and creative activities from different cultures during Children’s Week, which runs from 24 October to 1 November 2026.
The state-supported programme is aimed at children aged up to 12 and their families. This year’s theme celebrates children’s freedom to speak their own language, enjoy their culture and practise their religion. For families settling into a new community, the events offer a chance to meet neighbours without leaving their own traditions behind.
In a 23 October announcement, the Victorian Government said 164 not-for-profit organisations would share A$152,600 to run activities. The programme includes cooking, drumming, dance, sport and craft. This is funding for organisers, not a payment that parents need to apply for.

The Victorian Government’s event directory lists organisers, activities and available location details across the state. Use it as a starting point, then check the organiser’s current booking page.
Stay and play in Bentleigh East
Moorabbin Area Toy Library’s United in Play event takes place on Saturday, 31 October, from 10am to noon at East Bentleigh Village Garden, 92 Bignell Road. Children can try music, craft, toys and face painting.
The organiser’s 21 October notice confirms free tickets. You do not need to be a toy library member. Reserve a ticket for each child attending, except babies under one; adults do not need tickets. Children must remain with their accompanying adult throughout the event. Check current availability before making plans.
A free session for younger children in Darebin
Darebin Council has also listed a sensory play session for local families with children aged zero to five. It takes place in Reservoir on Thursday, 29 October, from 10am to noon, with creative play, different textures and multicultural storytelling and rhymes.
Bookings are essential and places are limited. Families should register their interest through the council page. The Early Years Team will then contact them to confirm the booking and provide the event location. Sending the form is not itself confirmation of a place.
Check before travelling
Start with the official directory, then check the organiser’s current page before setting out. Confirm the age range, exact venue, accessibility arrangements and whether you need to book. The state programme promotes free activities, but check the individual booking page for any charge. Free entry does not necessarily mean you can arrive without registering.
