Söderhallarna reopens at Stockholm’s Medborgarplatsen on Friday, 23 October 2026, after three years of renovation. For people living on or visiting Södermalm, the return brings back a place to buy ingredients, meet for lunch or stop for a meal. But the opening is happening in stages, rather than unveiling every part of the building at once.
Food first, with more to follow
The first wave includes most food-hall traders and several restaurants. Köttkompaniet, Sjömatbaren, Affinage and Pärlans Konfektyr are among the opening businesses, alongside SIN Ramen, Kajsas Fisk, Bouillon, Zazha and Kafé Søder, according to owner Atrium Ljungberg’s 22 October announcement.
Systembolaget has also opened. The beer-focused restaurant hall Gränd is expected towards the end of 2026, while a craft bakery and a bagel concept are planned for 2027. Those later openings matter if you are returning with a particular shop or venue in mind.
The cinema is not reopening with the food hall. Filmstaden announced on 23 October that its Söder cinema is due back in February 2027. Its current venue page still lists it as temporarily closed.
A familiar building, with new art
Designed by Bo Kjessel and opened in 1992, Söderhallarna is recognised by Stockholm’s City Museum for its cultural-historical value. The refurbishment retains the building’s distinctive postmodern architecture rather than replacing its character with a completely new interior, according to the venue’s account of the project.
Three sculptures by Södermalm-based artist Joakim Ojanen have been installed. The largest is a bronze fairy almost four metres tall, positioned at the entrance facing Medborgarplatsen. It gives returning visitors a new landmark to look for while the wider reopening continues.
Planning a visit
The address is Medborgarplatsen 3, Stockholm. The venue recommends taking the green-line metro to Medborgarplatsen. Another option is a commuter train to Stockholm södra, using the east exit towards Swedenborgsgatan and walking through Fatbursparken. Its visitor information page also points drivers to P-Hus Medborgarplatsen and notes cycle parking around the square.
The published general hours for the food hall and restaurants are 10:00–20:00 Monday to Friday and 10:00–18:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Individual businesses can keep different hours, so check the specific trader or restaurant before travelling, especially for an evening visit.
The practical distinction for the opening weeks is simple: the food hall is back, but the full programme of restaurants, shops and entertainment is still taking shape.
