Sapporo lights up for winter: new displays and a Christmas market from 20 November

Babylon Radio
Listen nowA fountain made of light, a keyboard that sets an installation dancing and Christmas stalls filled with food and gifts: Sapporo is giving you plenty of reasons to head outdoors this winter. The city’s White Illumination and Munich Christmas Market begin on 20 November 2026, with Odori Park offering an easy starting point for an evening together.
For newcomers, this is the sort of outing that needs little introduction. Invite a colleague or neighbour, choose a meeting point and let the displays give you something to discover together. Start with the market, then make a slow circuit of the lights rather than treating the evening as a list of sights to tick off.
Play your way through Odori Park
The Odori illumination programme brings its displays to blocks 3–5. In block 3, a new fountain-inspired installation replaces the previous floral design, with a special light show scheduled for 11–13 December. Block 4’s snowflake tunnel gains colour-changing accents this year.
Block 5 is particularly appealing if you would rather join in than simply take photographs. Lights inside a transparent dome respond to movement, while a new keyboard connects music with lighting effects. Odori’s displays run until 25 December, normally from 16:30 to 22:00, extending to midnight on 23–25 December.
Make time for the Christmas market
Nearby, the Munich Christmas Market occupies Odori blocks 1 and 2 from 20 November to 25 December. Its German connection comes through Sapporo’s sister-city relationship with Munich, bringing wooden huts, Christmas goods, German food and mulled wine into the park.
Block 1 combines a decorated tree and wooden arches with workshops, Santa greetings and stage events. Block 2 concentrates on food and shopping, with a new lounge incorporating somewhere to pause. Arriving before the lights switch on gives you time to browse, choose something to eat and watch the atmosphere change.
The market opens 11:00–21:00, with last orders at 20:45. Cashless payment is available. Allow a separate budget for food and shopping.

Extend your evening towards the red-brick building
For another scene, head to the red-brick area and Akapla. At Akapla, illuminated ginkgo trees combine with synchronised sound and light, with the former Hokkaido Government Office building as a backdrop. The building itself is bathed in blue illumination.
Both begin on 20 November, but their seasons finish separately: the red-brick building display ends on 28 February 2027, while Akapla continues until 14 March 2027. Published hours are 16:30–22:00, with the starting time adjusted to sunset. That makes this area an option for a later winter visit too.
A January reason to return
Nakajima Park’s SNOWFISH installation arrives later, from 9–28 January 2027, between 10:00 and 20:00. Created by ENESS under the supervision of Sapporo International Art Festival 2027, its oversized inflatable creatures take inspiration from fish and Hokkaido sea urchins. Their light and sound respond to people’s movements, and visitors can enter the balloon-like works. It is a separate January outing, not part of the November opening.
Choose your meeting point and go
Odori Station serves the park on the Tozai, Namboku and Toho subway lines. The organiser’s access guide lists exits for different blocks, including exit 8’s lift access near block 3, and links to accessibility information and a universal access map.
Use that map to pick a convenient meeting point, dress for an outdoor winter evening and leave room for a warm stop along the way. For a first visit, the market and Odori displays make a satisfying combination: something to taste, something to play with and a new shared memory of the city.
