What is on the main stage?
The opening hour pairs the formal ceremony with wadaiko drumming and the festival song, “Ibuki”. From 11am, the schedule moves through Sōran Bushi folk dance, Radio Taiso exercise, choral music and Japanese folk songs played on instruments including shamisen and shakuhachi.
The lunchtime programme includes an Okinawan sanshin group, Ryukyu kobujutsu martial arts and Awa Odori. Visitors can join a Bon Odori session from 2.15pm, followed by cosplay, city pop, anime songs, British sumo and a Kenbu sword-dance demonstration.
Later highlights include Yosakoi dance, Japanese traditional dance, shamisen pop and music from the Sakura Cherry Tree Project. The final hour brings together Japanese dancers from Britain’s three major ballet companies before a closing Bon Odori, “Ibuki” and London taiko drummers.
The timings are detailed in the festival’s 28-page official programme. Stage schedules can change, so check the event’s live information on the day.
What food and cultural activities are available?
Food and drink stalls will be arranged around the Trafalgar Square fountains. The festival also lists travel information, cultural attractions and gift stalls. A mikoshi procession will move around the square during the day, while kendama demonstrations and audience-participation dances provide activities beyond the main stage.
Japan Matsuri has operated in London since 2009 and has been held in Trafalgar Square since 2012. The Embassy of Japan describes the event as the UK’s biggest annual festival of Japanese culture and food.
What can visitors bring into Trafalgar Square?
The organisers have published entry restrictions for safety and crowd management. Visitors should pay particular attention to the bag-size rule.
- Bags larger than A4 size are not permitted.
- Bikes, scooters, e-scooters and hoverboards are not permitted.
- Opened bottles or cans of alcohol are not permitted.
- Animals are not permitted, except assistance dogs.
- Weapons and bladed items are prohibited.
The full Japan Matsuri website links to detailed conditions of entry and live event information. Because the festival can operate one-in, one-out at capacity, arriving earlier may reduce the chance of a queue.
Is Japan Matsuri suitable for first-time visitors?
Yes. The programme mixes short demonstrations, music, dance, food and participatory activities, so visitors do not need prior knowledge of Japanese culture. The morning and early afternoon are particularly strong for traditional performance, while the later programme brings together pop culture, contemporary music and dance.
