Japan’s Culture Day: free museum collections to visit on 3 November

Babylon Radio
Listen nowCulture Day on Tuesday, 3 November 2026 offers a chance to explore museum collections without paying the usual admission charge. For newcomers looking for an inexpensive day out, the important detail is which galleries are included: free entry to a collection does not necessarily include the museum’s special exhibitions.
Japan’s education ministry has published its 2026 list of participating national museums and galleries. Here are practical options in Tokyo and Osaka, with further choices around the country.
Tokyo National Museum: collections, not every exhibition
Tokyo National Museum’s visitor information explicitly lists 3 November 2026 as a free-admission day for its Collection Exhibitions. Special exhibitions have separate ticketing, so check before choosing a particular show.
The museum is at 13-9 Ueno Park, around ten minutes on foot from JR Ueno or Uguisudani station. Its regular Tuesday hours are 9.30am–5pm, with final admission half an hour before closing. Visitors enter through the main gate, where security and bag checks apply; suitcases are not permitted.
Some galleries remain closed for maintenance. In particular, Room 4 of the Honkan is closed from 26 October, so free entry should not be read as a promise that every room is accessible.
Osaka: a final day to see the collection display
The National Museum of Art, Osaka also lists Tuesday, 3 November 2026 as a free day for its Collection Exhibitions. It is the closing date of Toward the 50th Anniversary Collection 1: Self / Action.
Published hours are 10am–5pm, with entry until 4.30pm. The museum’s special exhibition has its own admission arrangements; the collection’s free day is not a blanket waiver for everything in the building.
Other options, and what to check
The ministry’s list also includes the permanent collections at Tokyo’s National Museum of Western Art and National Museum of Nature and Science, the collection exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and Kyoto’s National Museum of Modern Art Collection Gallery.
Choose the collection you want to see, then check that museum’s current opening hours, access information and exhibition notices before travelling. If you want a separately ticketed show, check its booking rules rather than assuming the holiday makes it free. The ministry’s list is a useful starting point, not a claim that every museum in Japan is participating.
Information checked on 28 October 2026. Times are local.
