Italy IT-Wallet 2026: Which Documents You Can Keep in the IO App

Babylon Radio
Listen nowItaly’s IT-Wallet has now passed 10 million activations in the IO app. The digital wallet lets eligible users add official documents to the app’s Portafoglio, or Wallet, section.
Which documents are available?
The national digital-transformation department reported in February 2026 that IT-Wallet had 17.3 million documents loaded. The main documents available include:
- Italian driving licence
- Tessera Sanitaria, including the European Health Insurance Card function
- European Disability Card, for eligible holders
Availability depends on whether you are entitled to the underlying Italian document.
Is a digital document the same as having the physical card?
The IO app can make everyday proof of eligible documents more convenient, but users should still check the requirements for the specific situation, especially for international travel or where a physical original is explicitly required.
How do you find IT-Wallet?
Install or update the official IO app and open the Wallet section. The app guides eligible users through adding supported documents and completing the required identity checks.
Why this matters for newcomers
Italy increasingly uses digital identity and digital public services. If you are a resident and hold eligible Italian documents, keeping them in the official IO app can reduce the number of cards you need to carry for some domestic uses.
