Germany’s Deutschlandticket Costs €63 in 2026: What Newcomers Need to Know

The Deutschlandticket costs €63 per month until 31 December 2026 and rises to €66.80 on 1 January 2027. It remains one of the simplest ways to use local and regional public transport across Germany without buying separate tickets in every city.

Where can you use the Deutschlandticket?

The ticket is valid on local and regional public transport throughout Germany, including many buses, trams, U-Bahn, S-Bahn and regional trains.

It is not designed for long-distance ICE, IC or EC trains in normal circumstances, so check the service type before boarding.

How much does it cost in 2026?

From January 2026, the monthly price is €63. The German federal government notes that states and local transport authorities may offer their own discounted versions for groups such as students, apprentices or people on low incomes.

What changes in January 2027?

The German federal government’s guidance, updated on 27 October 2026, confirms the new €66.80 monthly price from 1 January 2027. Until then, the standard ticket remains €63.

DB subscribers: check the 30 November deadline

For DB subscriptions ordered before 15 October 2026, the person who ordered the ticket must accept the new price and terms by 30 November 2026 using the Abo-Portal or DB Navigator.

If you refuse or miss the deadline, DB says the subscription ends on 31 December 2026. Orders from 15 October 2026 already include the new terms and need no separate consent.

Other providers may have different procedures. Check your provider’s notice. Students with semester tickets should check their university’s arrangements.

Jobtickets and semester tickets: check your own rate

The Jobticket price is not necessarily what an employee pays. The federal government explains that employers contributing at least 25% can unlock a further 5% discount. For example, Cologne operator KVB lists a maximum employee contribution of €46.76 a month from 1 January 2027 under this arrangement. Ask your employer what it contributes.

Semester tickets follow a different timetable. DB says the January increase does not affect the winter semester 2026/27 or summer semester 2027, and its semester-ticket holders do not need to give price-change consent. The new discounted rate applies to whole semesters beginning from 1 June 2027, with universities and student representatives communicating the charge. KVB lists €40.08 a month, or €240.48 for six months, for winter semester 2027/28. Check your university’s notice rather than assuming a January increase.

Is it a subscription?

Yes. The Deutschlandticket is generally sold as a monthly subscription through participating transport companies and associations. Cancellation rules can depend on the provider, so check the deadline before assuming you can stop it at the end of the current month.

Why it is useful for newcomers

If you are new to Germany and expect to commute regularly, the ticket can remove much of the confusion around local fare zones. It is especially useful if you travel between neighbouring towns or use several transport networks.
