Listen nowDublin can feel expensive when you are new. Rent, food, transport and study costs can add up quickly.
However, you do not need to spend money every time you leave your accommodation.
There are many free things to do in Dublin, including museums, galleries, parks, libraries, walks and cultural events. This guide focuses on places and activities that are free to enter or enjoy.
You may still need to pay for transport, food, special exhibitions or optional tours. Some free events also require advance booking.
Whether you are an international student, a newcomer or simply trying to manage your budget, these are practical ways to explore Dublin for €0.
If you need more general advice about settling into the city, Babylon also has a guide for international students in Dublin.
Explore Dublin’s free museums and galleries
Dublin has several museums and galleries with free general admission. They are useful on rainy days, during a quiet afternoon or when you want to meet someone without paying for food or drinks.
Temporary exhibitions, guided tours and special events may have different prices. Always check the venue’s website before travelling.
National Gallery of Ireland
The National Gallery of Ireland is one of the easiest free places to begin exploring Dublin.
It is located beside Merrion Square in Dublin 2 and contains an extensive collection of Irish and European art. You do not need to be an art expert to enjoy it.
Walk slowly, choose a few rooms and spend time looking at the works that interest you. There is no need to see the entire collection in one visit.
Entry to the permanent collection is free. Many temporary exhibitions are also free, although some special exhibitions require a ticket.
The gallery is a good option for a rainy afternoon, a quiet solo visit or a low-cost plan with someone you have recently met.
Check the opening hours and current exhibitions before visiting.
National Museum of Ireland
Admission to all National Museum of Ireland locations is free. Its two main Dublin sites are:
- National Museum of Ireland – Archaeology on Kildare Street
- National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts & History at Collins Barracks
The Archaeology museum is a strong choice if you want to learn about Ireland’s history and see some of the country’s oldest objects.
Its collections include prehistoric artefacts, Viking material, ancient gold and objects connected to religious and ceremonial life in Ireland.
The Collins Barracks museum covers decorative arts, design, fashion, military history and changes in Irish society.
Both museums contain extensive collections, so you do not need to see everything in one visit. Choose one area, take your time and return another day if you want to explore more.
Opening hours and access arrangements can change. Check the official website before travelling.
Irish Museum of Modern Art
The Irish Museum of Modern Art, normally called IMMA, is located at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. It is near Kilmainham Gaol and within reach of Heuston Station.
General admission to IMMA is free, and many exhibitions can be visited without paying. Some special exhibitions, events or programmes may have different ticketing arrangements.
The grounds, formal gardens and meadows are also worth exploring, particularly when you want space to walk, sit outside or take photographs.
Modern art can sometimes feel confusing. That is normal. You do not need to understand every work.
Visit with a friend, choose one artwork each and discuss what you liked, disliked or did not understand. It can be an easy way to begin a conversation without spending money.
IMMA is normally closed on Mondays, except on bank holidays. Check its current programme and opening hours before travelling.
Enjoy Dublin’s free parks and gardens
Dublin’s parks provide space to walk, exercise, read or meet friends. They can also offer a welcome break from crowded accommodation and busy streets.
National Botanic Gardens
The National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin are free to enter and explore.
They are a good choice when you need a break from traffic, screens or shared accommodation. You can walk through the gardens, visit the historic glasshouses or bring a book and find a quiet place to sit.
The gardens are about three kilometres from Dublin city centre, so plan your route before leaving. Entry is free, but transport is not. Guided tours usually require a paid ticket.
Because the gardens are an important scientific collection, several activities are not allowed. These include:
- Picnics
- Bicycles
- Jogging or running
- Ball games
- Musical instruments or recorded music
There is a restaurant and café in the Visitor Centre if you want to buy food or a drink.
The gardens work well for a quiet solo afternoon, a relaxed first date or a weekend walk with friends.
Check the current opening hours and visitor rules before travelling.
Phoenix Park
Phoenix Park is one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Entry is free, and the park itself is open 24 hours a day throughout the year.
The park provides plenty of space for walking, running, cycling or simply sitting outside.
You can keep your visit simple. Bring water and a jacket, walk for an hour or meet friends for a picnic when the weather is suitable.
Dublin Zoo is located inside Phoenix Park, but admission to the zoo is not free. You do not need to enter the zoo to enjoy the rest of the park.
The park also contains walking and cycling routes, the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre, Victorian gardens and several important buildings and monuments.
If you are new to Dublin, Phoenix Park is a useful reminder that the city is more than its busiest streets.
Although the park remains open, individual buildings, cafés and visitor facilities have their own opening hours.
Use Dublin’s free libraries
A library is not only a place to borrow books. It can also provide a quiet place to study, use a computer, attend an event or spend time without being expected to buy anything.
Dublin City Libraries
Dublin City Libraries provide books, study spaces, computers, online resources and community events.
These services can be particularly useful if your accommodation is noisy, crowded or unsuitable for studying.
Library membership is free. You can register in person at a branch or begin the registration process online.
If you register online, you normally have one month to visit a library branch with photo identification and proof of address. Staff can then complete your registration and give you a permanent library card.
If you have difficulty providing the standard documents, contact your local library and ask what alternatives may be accepted.
Printing and photocopying involve small charges, but you can enter the library and use many of its facilities without paying.
Check the documents required to complete your registration:
National Library of Ireland
You can also visit the National Library of Ireland near Kildare Street.
Its public exhibitions are free to enter and can be especially interesting if you enjoy Irish literature, history or photography.
A Reader’s Ticket is required to use the library’s reading rooms and research spaces. You do not normally need one simply to visit a public exhibition.
Opening arrangements vary between the main library, exhibition spaces and the National Photographic Archive. Check the relevant location before visiting.
Explore central Dublin on foot
Walking is one of the simplest free things to do in Dublin. It can also help you understand how different parts of the city connect.
You do not need to pay for a guided tour. Choose one area, save a few locations on your phone and explore at your own pace.
Possible routes include:
- St Stephen’s Green and Merrion Square
- Grafton Street and its side streets
- The publicly accessible outdoor areas of Trinity College
- The River Liffey and the Ha’penny Bridge
- Temple Bar in the morning, before it becomes busy
- Dublin Docklands and Grand Canal Dock
- The Grand Canal between Portobello and Rathmines
Access to parts of Trinity College may change because of university activities or events. Attractions such as the Book of Kells Experience and the Old Library require paid tickets.
You could also bring headphones and create your own walking soundtrack. However, remain aware of traffic, bicycles and other people around you.
The goal is not to visit every famous place in one day. It is to become more familiar with your new city.
Find free events in Dublin
Dublin has free events throughout the year. These may include talks, exhibitions, workshops, music, language exchanges, cultural festivals and community activities.
Museum websites, library calendars, university noticeboards and community pages are useful places to look.
Remember that a free event may still require advance booking. Reserve a place early if capacity is limited, and cancel your booking if you can no longer attend.
Attend Culture Night
One important annual event is Culture Night.
In 2026, Culture Night will take place on Friday, 18 September. Free cultural events will be held in Dublin and across Ireland.
Participating museums, galleries, studios, libraries and community organisations may extend their opening hours. Special performances, workshops and exhibitions are also organised for the evening.
Some Culture Night activities allow visitors to arrive without a ticket, while others require advance booking. Check the individual event page instead of assuming that every venue accepts walk-in visitors.
You do not need to wait for one major annual event to experience culture in Dublin. Continue checking local calendars throughout the year.
Visit Dublin’s markets without overspending
You do not need to buy something every time you visit a market.
Markets can be an enjoyable way to explore a neighbourhood, hear different languages, see local products and understand what people in the city enjoy.
Go with a friend, set a spending limit of €0 and treat the visit as a walk.
If you decide to buy something, choose one small item instead of allowing a free afternoon to turn into an expensive lunch.
Visiting markets can also introduce you to parts of Dublin that you may want to explore again.
Market locations, opening days and operating times can change. Check current information before travelling rather than relying on an old article or social media post.
Make free plans with other people
When you are new to Dublin and trying to save money, staying at home can feel like the easiest option.
However, meeting people does not need to involve expensive dinners, drinks or event tickets.
Try suggesting:
- A walk in a park
- A free museum visit
- A library study session
- A picnic in a park where picnics are permitted
- A free university or college event
- A language exchange
- A community meetup
- A walk beside the River Liffey or Grand Canal
Simple activities are often better for getting to know someone. They provide time to talk without creating pressure to spend money.
Be clear when making the plan. Saying “Would you like to visit the National Gallery on Saturday afternoon? Entry is free” is easier to answer than a vague suggestion to meet sometime.
Check temporary closures before travelling
Not every well-known free attraction is open throughout the year.
Chester Beatty
Chester Beatty is normally free to visit, but it is closed to the public from 15 June until the end of December 2026.
The closure is connected to arrangements for Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
During the closure, some Chester Beatty educational activities may take place at libraries, parks and other locations around Dublin.
Check the official website for programme updates and reopening information.
Hugh Lane Gallery
Hugh Lane Gallery is currently closed while refurbishment work and construction of the new City Library take place.
The gallery may organise activities at other locations while its main building is closed. Check its official website before including it in your plans.
Do not rely on an older list of free Dublin attractions without confirming that each venue is currently accessible.
You can explore Dublin without spending much
The best free things to do in Dublin are not only about saving money.
They can help you understand the city, create a routine and spend time with other people without worrying about the bill.
Start with one museum, one park or one walking route this week.
You do not need to know Dublin perfectly. You only need to keep exploring it.
