Canada’s C$5,000 Red Seal bonus opens for applications on 16 November

Babylon Radio
Listen nowTradespeople who have finished an apprenticeship in Canada may soon be able to claim a C$5,000 completion bonus. Applications for the Red Seal Completion Bonus open on 16 November 2026, with some people who qualified last year also eligible.
Employment and Social Development Canada announced the opening date on 23 October. The application service is not open yet, but eligible workers can use the time to check their records and gather documents.
Who can qualify?
The official eligibility rules require applicants to be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons. They must have completed an apprenticeship as a registered apprentice in a designated Red Seal trade and become certified journeypersons.
Certification must have been obtained on or after 1 April 2025. Applicants must also meet the application deadlines and provide the supporting documents required for their province or territory.
This distinction matters for internationally trained workers: holding a work permit or having experience in a skilled trade does not, by itself, meet the published conditions. The programme specifically requires completion of a registered apprenticeship. Workers who gained certification through a different route should check their circumstances with the programme rather than assume they qualify.
Regular full-time high-school students are not eligible. Adult-learning and professional-upgrading classes do not count as high school under the programme’s definition, but applicants must still meet all the other eligibility conditions.
How much is available?
The programme page lists C$5,000 for each eligible designated trade in which a person completes an apprenticeship and receives certification, up to a maximum of C$50,000.
Red Seal trades meet national standards that help qualified tradespeople work across Canada. The trade must be designated in the relevant province or territory. Readers can find the official trade-list link and an explanation of apprenticeship terms in the government’s programme overview.
Two application deadlines
- If your certification date falls between 1 April 2025 and 15 November 2026, apply by 31 May 2027.
- If you become certified on or after 16 November 2026, apply within 12 months of that certification date.
There is a separate deadline for paperwork: all required supporting documents must arrive within 28 calendar days of starting the application. If they do not, a new application will be needed.
What to prepare now
The government says applicants should gather their Social Insurance Number, mailing address, banking details for direct deposit, trade name, certification date, province or territory of certification and apprentice identification number. An email address is optional but recommended.
Protected persons and permanent residents whose Social Insurance Number begins with a 9 will also need proof of status in Canada. Further documents may be required depending on where the person qualified.
Use the official Canada.ca programme page for the application opening and document updates. The announced start date gives eligible recent graduates time to prepare, rather than a reason to send personal documents before the service opens.
