Canada physiotherapy applications delayed: which credentialling route applies?

Babylon Radio
Listen nowPhysiotherapists trained outside Canada who are waiting for a qualifications assessment should check which application route their file follows. The Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators (CAPR) has warned of temporary delays after receiving an unusually high number of Standard Pathway applications.
In its 27 October notice, CAPR says applications and documents will continue to be processed in the order received. It will contact applicants directly if it needs more information. The notice does not give a revised completion date or say how long the extra wait will last.
The submission date matters
Applications submitted on 14 October 2026 or earlier will be assessed through the Standard Pathway. CAPR says its new Comparability Pathway launched on 15 October, with applications assessed under the pathway operating when they were submitted. An existing application is therefore not automatically moved to the new route.
For someone planning a move, employment or further training around a credentialling decision, the practical point is to avoid treating an earlier processing estimate as a confirmed completion date.
New applicants should choose the right route
CAPR’s official starting guide describes the Comparability Pathway as the route for most internationally educated physiotherapists. It includes a qualifications assessment, the Physiotherapy Evaluation Tool (PET) and additional learning where required. The Standard Pathway is now closed to new applicants.
There are exceptions. A separate Pre-Approved Pathway exists for eligible applicants educated in specified jurisdictions, including Ireland, the UK and Australia. Education location alone is not enough: applicants should read the full eligibility conditions before applying.
Do not confuse an assessment with a licence
The Comparability process determines eligibility to attempt the Canadian Physiotherapy Examination; it does not itself confer a licence to practise. Applicants whose assessment identifies gaps may need further learning, and not every outcome permits progression to the examination.
For eligible PET applicants, CAPR currently lists a 16 December 2026 sitting, with applications due by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on 11 November. That is a PET deadline, not a promise that a new credentialling application will be assessed in time.
Licensing is handled by the provincial or territorial regulator. Check the requirements where you intend to work, alongside CAPR’s guidance, before committing to a start date.
Checked on 28 October 2026.
