Canada’s Express Entry transport category: which workers can qualify?

Babylon Radio
Listen nowCanada’s Express Entry transport category is narrower than its name suggests. It currently covers four aviation and vehicle-maintenance occupations, not everyone who works in transport. For eligible workers, it offers a route to compete for an invitation to apply for permanent residence—not automatic approval.
In round 453 on 28 October 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada issued 150 invitations in the Transport Occupations, 2026-Version 2 category. The lowest invited Comprehensive Ranking System score was 477.
Which occupations qualify?
IRCC’s current category eligibility page lists these National Occupational Classification 2021 codes:
- 72404: Aircraft mechanics and aircraft inspectors.
- 72600: Air pilots, flight engineers and flying instructors.
- 22313: Aircraft instrument, electrical and avionics mechanics, technicians and inspectors.
- 72410: Automotive service technicians, truck and bus mechanics and mechanical repairers.
You need at least 12 months of full-time experience, or the part-time equivalent, in one listed occupation within the previous three years. That experience may be in Canada or abroad and need not be continuous. The qualifying occupation need not be your primary occupation.
A matching job title is not enough
The round’s ministerial instructions require experience matching the NOC lead statement and a substantial number of its main duties, including every essential duty. Unauthorised work in Canada cannot count towards the required experience.
Compare what you actually did with the occupation description rather than choosing a code because its title sounds close. Keep this distinction in mind if your employer uses a broad title such as “technician”.
What happens after that?
You must also qualify for one of the three Express Entry programmes and satisfy the round’s requirements. Eligible profiles are ranked by CRS score. An invitation gives you 60 days to submit the permanent-residence application; IRCC then assesses eligibility, accuracy and admissibility.
For candidates tied at 477 in this round, the published tie-break was 4 June 2026 at 21:48:22 UTC, based on profile-submission time. That score is this round’s result, not a promised threshold for the next draw.
Before making plans, check the live category rules and your own profile. A category match alone is not a job offer, an invitation or a decision granting permanent residence.
