Belgium Train Tickets Changed in July 2026: Buy Before You Board

Listen nowSince 1 July 2026, passengers on most Belgian trains must have a valid ticket before they board. SNCB/NMBS no longer sells ordinary domestic tickets on board.
What changed?
Previously, passengers without a ticket could buy one from the train conductor with an additional charge. That option ended on 1 July 2026 for normal domestic journeys.
You now need to buy your ticket in advance through the SNCB/NMBS website or app, a ticket machine, or a station ticket office.
What happens if you board without a valid ticket?
SNCB says the conductor will issue a statement of irregularity for a fixed amount of €90. You can continue your journey, but the amount must be paid within 14 days.
Are there exceptions?
There are limited exceptions on some international services, including certain EuroCity, EuroCity Direct, OUIGO and TGV INOUI trains, and some cross-border services to Lille. Check the conditions for your specific train.
What newcomers should do
If you are new to Belgium, download the SNCB/NMBS app or learn where the ticket machines are at your regular stations. Make sure your ticket is valid for the correct journey before boarding.
