Australia job-seeker payment rules: two paused measures return on 26 October

Babylon Radio
Listen nowTwo paused rules that can stop welfare payments in Australia will return on Monday 26 October 2026. The change matters if you receive a payment with job-search or other compulsory activities through an employment service.
The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations confirmed the date in its 19 October statement.
Who is affected?
The Targeted Compliance Framework applies to people with mutual obligation requirements in Workforce Australia, Inclusive Employment Australia and Transition to Work. These are tasks linked to keeping a payment, such as attending appointments or looking for work.
The framework does not apply to people in the Remote Australia Employment Service. This announcement concerns compliance rules, not a new payment or an invitation for all newcomers to claim benefits.
Two rules return, not every penalty
Payments can again be suspended for refusing or failing to accept suitable paid work, including accepting a job but not starting it. A separate rule allows cancellation when someone does not meet a notified reconnection requirement within four weeks.
Those are different steps. Suspension puts a payment on hold. Cancellation after a missed reconnection deadline is not the same as the separate work-refusal cancellation rule, which remains paused.
Other paused provisions for payment reductions and cancellations will also stay paused until further safeguards are in place. DEWR expects those provisions to resume in the first quarter of 2027, but that is not a confirmed start date.
What happens after a missed requirement?
Under DEWR’s participant guidance, someone who commits a mutual obligation or work-refusal failure from 26 October has five business days to give a valid reason or re-engage. Otherwise, their payment is suspended.
After receiving a reconnection notice, the person has four weeks to meet the requirement or provide a valid reason. Doing so ends the suspension and restores the payment in full. Missing that deadline without a valid reason may lead to cancellation.
Before the restart, DEWR says it will clear mutual obligation failures and lift active payment suspensions for participants in the three affected services. This gives participants the full resolution period when the rules resume.
Where to get help
Check the notice from your employment service provider in your account. If you do not understand what is required, contact your provider, the Digital Services Contact Centre if you use Workforce Australia Online, or Services Australia on your usual payment line.
Services Australia’s help and complaints page explains these contact routes. It also says you can ask for a review if you disagree with a decision it has made, and request a free interpreter when making a complaint. Complaints about employment service providers follow DEWR’s process, linked from the same page.
