Listen nowNewcomers in Armamar can take a practical first step towards speaking Portuguese with more confidence this November. The municipality is promoting an A1 Portuguese language course designed to build basic communication skills and help migrant residents take part in community life.
The municipal announcement, updated on 22 October, sets out plans for two evening classes a week, from 18:00 to 21:00. The start is expected in November 2026, with the teaching days still to be confirmed.
A beginner course built around settling in
The course is part of Português Língua de Acolhimento, or Portuguese as a Host Language, usually shortened to PLA. It is being promoted through the DouroIntegra project with Armamar’s Gabinete de Inserção Profissional, the local employment support office.
For someone building a life in the area, learning the language is about more than a classroom exercise. It can make everyday conversations, introductions and participation in local activities feel more accessible. This is an introductory A1 course, rather than a programme advertised for advanced speakers.
PLA courses form part of Portugal’s wider language-learning provision for migrants. The government’s overview of the programme explains that there are several learning pathways, from elementary A1 and A2 to B1 and B2. Armamar’s new announcement specifically names A1.
How to register in Armamar
Interested residents can register with the DouroIntegra or employment support team at the Câmara Municipal de Armamar building. The published email contact is dourointegra@cm-armamar.pt.
The municipality asks applicants for their residence permit, IBAN, an address certificate from their Junta de Freguesia, or parish council, and their employment contract. The local team can confirm the timetable and registration arrangements for each applicant.
The initiative is part of DouroIntegra’s work under FAMI 2030, with European Union co-funding. Local reporting by Jornal do Centro also highlights the course’s aim of helping newcomers develop basic Portuguese and connect with their community.
